There are 127 million people crowded onto an island. Japan's cities are some of the most dense and expensive places to live in the world. I suspect that subliminally, the reluctance of younger Japanese to marry and have children is a response to that.
I mean, the world is overpopulated - shortages of food, resources, water, space, increase daily. We're on the verge of running out of space to bury our garbage! Maybe now they're intrinsically and passively showing the way towards a kind of sustainability for humanity.
