In the 1930s, Argentina was the third most chosen destination by the Danes to live. The vast majority opted for rural areas such as Tandil, Tres Arroyos, Necochea and San Cayetano, but several decided to stay in the city. Thanks to that, Buenos Aires had its first sanatorium that was created by a doctor from this community.

Relations between Argentina and Denmark date back much earlier. Already in 1820 the exchange of textile products, glassware, furniture, ropes, woods and alcoholic beverages was relatively consolidated; and around 1840 diplomatic relations were established between the government of King Christian VIII of Denmark and the Argentine Confederation.

In addition, during the same decade, Danish doctors Carlos Furst and Juan Guillermo Saxild arrived. The first of them worked at the University of Buenos Aires and the British Hospital, he is remembered for being the creator of the first sanitarium in Buenos Aires and having battled a great cholera outbreak. He died in 1867, a victim of that disease. Today, a room and a memorial plaque located at the Hospital Muñiz pay homage to him.

The Danes in the Province of Buenos Aires, predominantly concentrated in an area of approx. 45,000 km² on the south, centered around the four counties Tandil, Necochea, Tres Arroyos and Coronel Dorrego. In this relatively manageable area, which is the size of Denmark, there lived approx. 60% of all danish immigrants in 1902. Most of the thousands of Danes who followed in the next decades also traveled to this area. This was primarily due to the personal network that provided newcomers with work and a community around other things, including church and socialization. The starting point for Danish immigration in the province was the city of Tandil. However, in the last decades of the 19th century, it was the areas between Tandil and the eastern and southern Atlantic coast that attracted danish immigrants.

It was especially the expansion of the railroad and cheap land that created this development. Although Danish immigrants came together in some specific areas, the danish colonies never formed as in the United States. However, there were rural (parishes) in the danish area, where the concentration of danish households was high in the 1920s. Lumb in Necochea County was a special case with 48% danish population, while the other parishes "Danes" in the province generally had 15-30% of inhabitants of Danish descent.

In the 1920s, some 100 Danish associations had been formed, including churches, schools, private clubs, farmers' and insurance associations and cooperatives. In the triangular area, there are currently approx. 50,000 Danes and descendants of danish descent. It has even managed to grow since the early 1870s, although immigration stopped in the 1930s.

Its name comes from "dyna": Denmark; and the Mapuche "huapi": island; "Danish Island", referring to the first non-Spanish European immigrants in the area, who were of that origin.

Dina Huapi's origin is the product of the settlement of Don Kristian Hansen and José Brendstrup in the area, both of danish origin. Here is when the first "tambo"(milking farm) is created.
Land owners, decide to divide and sell a large part of the uncultivated land in the 1970s and creating Dina Huapi 1 and 2. One would be located on the North-East coast of Lake Nahuel Huapi after the Ñirihuau river until almost the intersection with Route 23. The other fraction, the largest area, separated from the first by ex-route 237, is located east of it.


Every year two important festivals are held in the town, the feast of the steppe where the queen is chosen and the mochi fest where the town stays up all night hosting people from neighboring towns.

Un ejemplo sería León de Greiff, escritor Colombiano de bisabuelo Sueco. Sus descendientes aún gozan de cargos semi-importantes en el país o pertenecen al jet-set criollo.

Like other Nordic groups such as the Swedes, the Danish community also settled in the province of Misiones, particularly in places like Oberá and Puerto Iguazú. These Danes generally arrived via Brazil and then went inland until they reached the triple border and that was where they transferred to Argentina.

Yes Tenma Brazil and Argentina had Nordic migrations (Scandinavia + Finand & Iceland). Actually Brazil has the largest Dane Community (including descendents) in Latin America. Make me proud, research and contribute with a 'Danes in Brazil' post. Only danes it ll be more threads about nordic nations left.

Desde Tandil al sudeste, Fugl…

La llegada al país de grandes corrientes inmigratorias especialmente de países europeos, comenzó a fines del siglo XIX.
En Buenos Aires la llamada inmigración espontánea se dirigió preferentemente a las poblaciones existentes en sus alrededores .En 1854 se creó una comisión que sería la encargada de los asuntos migratorios, la que tres años después creó el célebre “hotel de inmigrantes”.

Sin embargo será recién con la ley Avellaneda, la N°817, del 16 de octubre de 1876, cuando se implementa un instrumento legal coherente para regir diferentes aspectos de la inmigración. El crecimiento de ésta queda marcado por las cifras censales que dan el 12,1 % de extranjeros en el primer censo nacional, el de 1869, hasta llegar al 30,3 % en el de 1914, el más alto de la historia. En Tandil en tanto en ese mismo censo los extranjeros eran el 37,4 % de la población, una cifra no superada hasta hoy. Fue entre los censos de 1895 y el de1914 en que se produjo la mayor afluencia de inmigrantes europeos, predominando, españoles, italianos, y franceses en ese orden.

En 1848-antes del período indicado-llegó a Tandil Juan Fugl, constituyéndose en el primer danés que se tenga memoria y pionero en la inmigración danesa en todo el sudeste de la provincia.

¡Qué había impulsado a Fugl a venir a estas tierras lejanas en 1844 desembarcando en Buenos Aires cuando tenía 33 años de edad? Él mismo en sus Memorias nos lo dice:
“Mi resolución de emigrar junto con el Doctor Jakobsen, -como muchas veces lo he contado-fue por un aviso leído en "Berlinske Tidende", diario de Copenhague. En él, un emigrante danés en Estados Unidos, hacía las ponderaciones de aquel país. Ocho días después, un navegante de apellido Wordinger, recomendaba más calurosamente la emigración a la Argentina, y se basaba especialmente en un buen clima, y sus tierras muy aptas para labranza, especialmente para gente del agro como abundaba en Dinamarca. Comenzamos pues, a hacer planes, leíamos y consultábamos mapas y
soñábamos con fabulosas aventuras y una vida libre y agradable, y con grandes fortunas; dentro de unos años, el regreso a nuestra patria, donde seríamos la envidia de nuestros vecinos de la ciudad natal. (Esta última aspiración era de Jakobsen, que gustaba del "dolce far niente". Una vida
cómoda y regalada, era su mayor deseo). Mi fuero interno quería otra cosa. Mi más alta aspiración había sido la riqueza espiritual y me sentiría feliz de poseerla aunque tuviera que vivir con modestia”.

Pero ¿qué conocimiento se tenía en Dinamarca de estas tierras
sudamericanas?. Fugl nos lo relata en las citadas Memorias:

“Las colonias del Río de la Plata eran en ese entonces muy poco conocidas en Dinamarca, sólo en algunos libros de geografía o en círculos más ilustrados se conocía la actuación del tirano Rosas, gobierno con frecuentes revoluciones, anarquías, asesinatos y horrores. De la emigración a esas colonias no se tenían noticias ni existían tampoco. Y por lo tanto nuestro viaje se consideraba una aventura y cosa de locos. Era el clima templado y la fertilidad de la tierra lo que nos había tentado como hijos de agricultores que éramos. Teníamos conocimiento de que en Buenos Aires vivían dos médicos daneses: el Dr. Fürst y el Dr. Saxild. Para éste último traíamos cartas de recomendación”.

La inmigración danesa en Argentina fue la tercera más importante y numerosa de esta colectividad en el mundo, después de Estados Unidos y Australia. Se estima que entre 1857 y 1930 arribaron a nuestro país unos 18.000 dinamarqueses. En su gran mayoría eran landarbejdere (peones) o tyende (sirvientes). Esa emigración fue especialmente impulsada-según señala M. Bjerg en “Inmigrantes daneses en la Argentina 1848 –1930” - por una “población en expansión, contradicciones entre producción agrícola y caída de los precios del cereal, sistema de herencia no partible y escasez de tierra”.

El siglo XX comenzó con un ingreso de cerca de mil inmigrantes en el quinquenio 1901 – 1905, cifra que se triplicó en el período más intenso de la inmigración danesa a la Argentina, 1911–1915. En 1912 se registró el más alto ingreso de daneses al país, pero a partir de 1922 entraron en un declive ya sin retorno.

Guillermo Nielsen (born 20 April 1951) is an Argentinian economist, currently president of the State-owned oil company YPF. He also served as Ambassador of Argentina in Germany designated by President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner between 2008 and 2010.[1]

He earned a degree in Economics from the University of Buenos Aires. During the presidencies of Néstor Kirchner and Eduardo Duhalde he served as Secretary of Finance, working together Minister Roberto Lavagna in the Argentine debt restructuring between 2002 and 2005.[2]

TANDIL.- In a line, uphill from the mountain range that leaves full view of the Lago del Fuerte, students from public and private schools wave Argentine and Danish flags. She greets them smiling, with one hand raised and the other occupied in holding the capelina that the fresh wind wants to snatch from her, even as she travels in an electric car to the monument that remembers Juan Fugl, a pioneer of a community who appeared here in mid-19th century and today, 53 years after his first and last visit to this city, he shows his warmest affection.

Margaret II, Queen of Denmark, responds with gestures of courtesy. He praises the natural beauties of these mountains, is surprised by the strong roots of his country's traditions and is moved when he sees the photos published in the pages of the March 27, 1966 edition of the local newspaper Nueva Era that reflected that historical scale.

"Velkommen", they say without shouting, because the monarch walks dressed in a fuchsia jacket and skirt almost next to the people but she does make physical contact with them. Just a gesture, a close greeting and the slow walk that follows, always surrounded by some of their custodians who had little work in this serene and tidy passage through one of the Argentine cradles of Danish immigration.

"She is beautiful, it makes me very happy to see her here again," Johanne María Emilia Bramsen, who is 95 years old, says to LA NACION, walks with a cane and made sure of a nearby place to at least cross a very direct look with the same person. the one she saw arrive as a princess, right here and more than half a century ago. "My father came to the country as a saddler and we kept many of the customs of his country," says this woman who resides in La Dulce, an area with a strong Danish presence as well as the entire front that includes the Necochea, Tres Arroyos and San Cayetano.

The queen was in Tandil just over six hours, the last she spent in the country. In the middle of the morning, she arrived at the airfield accompanied by her son Federico, crown prince of the throne, who remained almost in the background. The program of activities included a first stop at that monument to Fugl, recognized because he was the one who brought together his compatriots who arrived in these pampas and advanced with the development of meeting points. For example, the Danish Lutheran Church, inaugurated in 1877. Three years before he had been elected mayor, when he won by one vote over Ramón Santamarina.

Margarita II was in that same temple yesterday, where she participated in a religious ceremony with no more than fifty people who filled the capacity of the place. There they shared a prayer and then, from the pipe organ located closest to the dome, the chords of the hymns "The love of God" and "In the East the sun rises" sounded. She sang the latter, from memory. The closing was with the traditional request for blessing and protection to the entire royal family. "Doing it in front of the Queen herself was very strong and special, moving," Pastor Joel Nagel, representative of the Necochea congregation, acknowledged to LA NACION.

This visit was eagerly awaited here. "It was an open secret since last year but it was only confirmed a few months ago," said Alicia Larsen, president of the local Danish Center, which defines herself as "Argentine from end to end" but "Danish everywhere" since all four of her grandparents were born in Denmark.

The presence of students from different establishments in the city at one of the events was notified to those responsible for the royal protocol. "The queen had suggested that the boys not participate because she considered that they should not miss school for their visit, but she accepted when they explained that it was an educational outing," explained Larsen.

Valeria Güida and Patricia Ferreyra, teachers from the provincial school No. 53 in Tandil, accompanied the 6th B students. "During these previous days the arrival of Margarita II was taken to work in class on Denmark and different types of government, from democracy to monarchy," they detailed to LA NACION.

As in that visit in 1966, it was once again part of an official welcoming ceremony in the White Hall of the communal palace. Then the host was the mayor José Lunghi. This time he was received by his son, Miguel, now in charge of the municipal government. "It is the city that has made two nations like Denmark and Argentina a small homeland in common," the president told him before handing him the keys to the city. Both, together with Prince Federico and Lieutenant Governor Daniel Salvador, then went out onto the balcony to greet some 500 people who, again with Danish and Argentine flags, expressed affection and appreciation.

"We have had some wonderful days in Argentina," said the queen at a press conference, accompanied by her son. She highlighted the meeting she had with President Mauricio Macri and her wife and the pleasant meeting with Lunghi. But she further highlighted her satisfaction with the main purpose of this visit, which was "to visit so many Danes and descendants who live here." With about 200 she shared a Creole lunch before saying goodbye to Argentina.

Wearing typical outfits, dozens of them surrounded her in each of her activities. Clara Christensen, Mariana Löhr Cecilia Wulff and Grabriela Theill are daughters and / or granddaughters of Danes and today they are part of Fulke Dans Tandil, a traditional dance group. "Polkas and rounds are our rhythms," they explain about music that is played with violins, accordions, and flutes. And with simple steps, which are shared as a family. "Our boys from 2 to 12 years old are part of the group", they stand out to emphasize that the tradition is maintained. And that Denmark, since the arrival of Fugl to these descendants of compatriots, now with the Queen present, is still here more alive than ever.

Roque Germán Olsen Fontana (9 September 1925, Sauce de Luna, Argentina – 15 June 1992, Sevilla, Spain), commonly known as Roque Olsen, was an Argentine football player and manager. He stood out mainly in the historic Real Madrid of the 1950s, winning three leagues and two UEFA Champions League with the merengue club

Playing career
Olsen started his playing career in the local leagues of Parana, Entre Ríos. In 1949 he was signed by Tigre, the following year he joined champions Racing Club de Avellaneda. After playing 15 games for Racing Club, he joined Real Madrid where he went on to become one of the club's most important goal scorers. He played out his career with Córdoba CF in the late 1950s.



Managerial career
Olsen started his managerial career with Córdoba CF leading them to promotion to La Liga in 1962. He then managed Deportivo La Coruña, Real Zaragoza and FC Barcelona. He also managed Elche CF, Sevilla FC and Celta Vigo. His last managerial position before his death in 1992 was as manager of UD Las Palmas. In his role as a coach, he achieved a total of five promotions to the Spanish First Division with five different teams.

There was finns that around when rafael trujillo took power that settled in monte criste as part of immigration and agricultural effort. They were given land. But most ended up leaving because it was too hard for them or something.

Myndel Troels Pedersen ( 26 of September 1916 , Copenhagen , Denmark - 5 of February 2000 , Corrientes , Argentina ) was a naturalist , botanist, danish nationalized argentine , who worked extensively in Argentina , with the family of Amaranthaceae.

He lived his last years in his field establishment (which his father Niel Peter Pedersen had acquired in the 1920s ), which he would donate in 1991 to establish the Mburucuyá National Park , in the center of the province of Corrientes.

It had a Herbarium of 30,000 specimens, which is kept in the " Instituto de Botánica del Nordeste "

He was honored in his native country as "Knight of the Order of Dannebrog "; Dr. honoris causa of the University of Copenhagen ; Dr. honoris causa of the National University of the Northeast ; Corresponding Academician of the National Academy of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine.

Mortensen was born in Watertown, New York, on October 20, 1958, the son of Grace Gamble (née Atkinson; July 8, 1928 – April 25, 2015) and Viggo Peter Mortensen Sr. (May 8, 1929 – March 2, 2017). His mother was American, while his father was Danish; they met in Norway. His maternal grandfather was a Canadian from Nova Scotia. One of his grandmothers was from Trondheim, Norway. The family moved to Venezuela, then Denmark, and eventually settled in Argentina in the provinces of Córdoba, Chaco, and Buenos Aires, where Mortensen attended primary school and acquired a fluent proficiency in Spanish while his father managed poultry farms and ranches. He was baptized Lutheran.

When Mortensen was 11 and his brothers 8 and 6, their parents divorced and they and their mother returned to the US, where Viggo spent the rest of his childhood in New York, graduating from Watertown High School in Watertown in 1976.[8][9] He then attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, earning a bachelor's degree in Spanish studies and politics in 1980. Upon graduating, he lived in England and Spain, then moved back to Denmark, where he took various jobs such as driving trucks in Esbjerg and selling flowers in Copenhagen. Máximo Hugo Fjellerup (25/11/1997 in Tres Arroyos , Argentina) is a basketball player, who currently plays for San Lorenzo de Almagro of the National Basketball League. His position is that of shooting guard and he was part of the world runner-up with the Argentina team in China 2019.

He made his professional debut playing for Weber Bay during the season 2013-14 the LNB on February 21, 2014, just 16 years old in the party Weber Works Bay 64-76. During the beginning of the 2016-17 Season it has caused a sensation, becoming one of the most important projects for Argentine Basketball.

El Plan de la Mariposa


El Plan de la Mariposa se formó en 2008 como una banda argentina de rock latino y psicodélico integrada por nueve músicos: cinco hermanos y cuatro amigos. Surgida en Necochea, un par de años después hizo base en Buenos Aires.
La búsqueda de la banda partió de la fusión, entrelazando artes en una puesta escénica estimulante. Sus temas rozan distintos estilos como rock, psicodelia, cumbia y folklore.
Los comienzos fueron dentro de una gran familia caracterizada por el amor a la música. Máximo, Valentín y Camila son trillizos y junto con sus hermanos mayores, Santiago y Sebastián, completaron parte de la banda. Al poco tiempo se sumaron amigos y llegaron a ser un grupo de nueve músicos.
Editó su primer demo en 2009 pero con el paso del tiempo, los integrantes fueron llegando a la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Finalmente salió “Brote” (2011), su disco debut. Trabajando con el productor artístico Luis Volcoff vino su segundo disco, “Trance habitante” (2013).
