There is noticeable Turkic legacy in surnames for those with sharp eyes to notice them, but the genetic imprint is faint. Most people from here score some East Asian/Siberian, which is more likely linked to the Kipchak branch people who settled here historically, like the Cumans and Tatars rather than the Oghuz.
The only Oghuz people who came here are the Gagauz and they are fairly recent arrivals from Northeastern Bulgaria. Genetically they don't have any real Oghuz ancestry. They just sit on the East Balkan gradient between Romanians and Bulgarians.

I said locally mixed, because those results look suspiciously close to someone who is half Romanian/Moldovan and half Ukrainian, perhaps with some Roma mixed in too.
My mom who is a halfie scores similarly, with slightly elevated Med and lower Baltic, because her Romanian/Moldovan side is from the Southern-most district in the country.

Yes, regionally mixed. They are essentially Transnistrian, that breakaway republic is basically 1/3 Moldovan and 2/3 Russian-Ukrainian with bits of other influences.

What are your thoughts on the Baltic average in Moldova? Is it possible to score less than 30% being a Moldovan?

Between 25 and 30 is the average. From the results what I saw till now, the lowest Baltic score have the WeirdLookingFellow, but he is from Romania Moldova.

I don't have any kits from R. Moldova, but Moldovans from Romania usually mirror the situation on the other side of the river and the average there is 29.8%. 4 of these samples are from Northern Moldova/Bukovina (Suceava and Botosani) with 2 from Central (Vaslui and Neamt), so theoretically the average should be lower with Southern samples taken into consideration too.
The average of Moldovan from the K13 spreadsheet on Eurogenes seems to be 33%, but the creator of the calculator confirmed for me that those samples are mixed with Ukrainians and Russians.

Yes, he scores over the average, but their data is based on the current generation of tests, which have a lower resolution, so it's not as accurate as mine or Nurzat's, as ours is based on a lot more SNPs. You should read this thread, where I addressed this issue.

Yes, but the other way around, they should have more Atlantic, as my autosomal data uses twice the amount of SNPs. If I were to take a MyHeritage test too, then I'd probably score in between them, so perhaps about 34% Baltic. But there's no point in doing that, as 23andme's v4 had a better SNP coverage, so it's closer to truth. I've tested my sibling with MyHeritage last week, so I expect that this is exactly what he's going to get on K13. I haven't sent the sample back though, because of the virus situation, but we should have the results in about one month, if everything goes fine.

If this is the first test for your family then 23andme, because you will also get your yDNA and mtDNA assignments. MyHeritage has a slightly better resolution for autosomal DNA than 23andme v5, but at the end of the day they are not that different here. Once you have yDNA and mtDNA, you can upload your 23andme data to MyHeritage and test the rest of your family with MyHeritage, as it's cheaper, faster and has a larger database of DNA matches.

Gypsies live everywhere, most of them are concentrated in some specific regions of the country. About Transnistria, including Bender, I don't know, I was only two times in my life in that region. The problem is what people who score such high South Asian are Russian/Ukrainian admixed for some reason because score very high Baltic, for Russians is a norm to score high South Asian, but for Northern Russians, not southerners.

I don't think he has Gypsy ancestry - by the high score of Caucasus he may be of southern Russian origin and via Caucasus he could get some background South Asian that's ancestral to the population, not recent mix, dunno. anyway, his family may be mixed with local Moldovans, though they probably stayed ethnically Russian with language and all.

Guy looks mixed with some possible Tajik/Azeri immigrant based on his high West Asian and South Asian. But it may also be Romani as they have these two main components, I honestly don't think there's any way of truly knowing.

Also Aspirin said well that I have some lower Baltic but higher NA, I'm very curious to take a 23andme as well to see if there is any re-arrangement of these components.

you should model yourself on Global25 with Moldavian - from what I've seen until now, Moldovans in Romania are closest to that. Romanian in G25 is based on Apuseni I think, from what Vania Basascu said.

why? because in your county there is a native Hungarian-speaking population and the Ukrainians in the region are a bit western-shifted (towards Slovaks, though not there). in medieval times at some point there was a population move from Pokuttia to central Moldova (Roman-Bacau area), many "Polish" villages created but they were "Russian" most certainly (i.e. today's West Ukrainians in Galicia). so you could dig for deep "Hungarian" and "Ukrainian" genes (see the quotation marks)

My best g25 models need German, I tried this once. Started with Hungarian and went further West; the more I did, the better the fit got :picard1:
