Prince Albert, known as Eddy to his family, was the oldest son of the future Edward VII, and became second in line to the throne when he was born in 1864. His death from pneumonia in 1892 at the age of 28 shocked the nation.
Albert Victor proposed to Princess Mary of Teck on December 3, 1891. A date for the wedding was set for February 27, 1892.
At first Queen Victoria opposed any engagement of Princess Helene of Orleans and Prince Eddy because Helene was Roman Catholic. Once Albert Victor and Helene confided their love to her, the Queen relented and supported the proposed marriage.
