There isn't a whole lot we can improve on fighters in the current state a fighter is defined by it's ability to dogfight and you have to have certain characteristics to maintain that ability which stealth aircraft are not designed to do. The F-35 is meant to identify and track targets at long range avoiding dog fights, but if an F-16 got close the F-35 would be toast with the right sensory equipment. The military would be foolish to replace actual fighters over a multi-role craft.

A good analogy would be replacing tanks with Bradley IFV's. A tank at close range or with the right optics would decimate an IFV in most cases, even older tanks and Calvary tanks.

The bs of training and habit over concept is one we Americans have had to learn the hard way many times, the airforce may replace their fighters but certainly the navy and marines never will.

If you have enough money you can buy a used F-16 here in the USA!

These are F5-Tiger-II fighters that Brazil has modernized. It has low cost per flight hour and is in excellent condition. (otherwise it would not be allowed to take off in Nevada-US where Red Flag exercises took place). US planes are quite viable to stay for many years.
