I originally considered putting a photo of The Adventures of Priscilla as my second exmaple, but concluded it'd be too vulgar and risque for this forum. xD
Anyway, I was wondering whether people associated Australia more with its rural culture or its urban culture, as well as which out of The Adventures of Skippy and Muriel's Wedding is more well-known?
Well, I know a lot more now than I used to, but my stereotyped view of Australia was:
- Blonde people. Yeah, I used to think that, for some reason (maybe because many foreigners stereotype Australians as blond), that the Anglo stock that immigrated to Australian was blonder than the Britons back in the metropolis.
_ A mix of stereotyped California, with blonde tanned surfers, with with a redneck lifestyle, an stereotype of Texas.
Yeah, for some reason, my mind automatically compares Australia with Texas, and I'm not the only one.
Photo one again:

I suppose I think of beaches, surfing, and the Sydney Opera House. Cliche, but I didn't pick up on either of the references in the OP, big surprise.
I don't associate Australia with Skippy or Muriel's Wedding, or the vast majority of crap in TV and movies.
Some movies/shows that capture proper Australian-ness:
The Shiralee
Spotswood
The Dish
Crackerjack
The Castle
Sunday Too Far Away
Round the Twist
Kath & Kim (even though it's satire and I never watched it)
You found it annoying? That's saying something. I never watched it but I knew the characters from a previous show (Big Girls Blouse, maybe that's a better example), and they're a decent send-up of many suburban women. The 'look at moy' catchphrase in the 00s was annoying but also pretty funny tbh.
