This is an important part of our religion undoubtedly, of we don't touch feet of our elders they might feel offended.
It's s sign of showing respect listed by brahmins since vedic times so I and my children value it greatly. My boy is now 4 and first thing he did after waking up on his birthday is touching mine and her mother's feet and prayed for blessings.
In case of female child this custom is bit different, girl can only touch feet of her father, brother or grand father not anyone else unless he/she is a "senior citizen."
