Opinions on the Syrian regime

I am quite ambivalent to the Syrian regime. On one hand it is obvious that they have committed extreme atrocities including rape and murder of citizens but at the same time there is no real alternative to them. Their victory in the war is probably the only thing that would bring stability to the nation even though it would come at the cost of losing millions of citizens who now feel they have to be refugees at least until the foreseeable future. I met a Syrian guy who said he would never go back for fear of being prosecuted and killed by the authorities.

This is all independent of the foreign policy of the US and Russia, by the way.
