Yes for me also the same like the other comments South Central Asia. Pashtuns are more Near East Racial and also culturally. But Punjabis or Sindh and also Balochs are more Northwest Indian. NW India is just as much India. People make it sound, like it is some exotic off shoot to India. Culture, languages, food is similar to North India (for NW India). Just that there is a state cline, which all states exhibit as you move vertically vs. horizontally on a pan-India spectrum.

Pakistan is just as diverse as India. Geo-politically, we can safely place it in South Asia. Though a lot of Pakistani's abhor this, cause South Asia is primarily seen as == India, due to our large over presence in the continent. So they like to say else wise, but not South Asia. Pakistan has the honorable Pashtun and Balochi people.

I agree asingh, Pakistan sits at the cross roads between the Middle/Near East, Central Asia and South Asia. To be honest I think the phrase "Near East" has fallen into disuse recently, Middle East
would be more appropriate. We are definitely not East Asian, because that implies we lie within the Sinosphere *countries within Chinas cultural sphere of influence. Culturally however we
definitely fall into the South Asian category, though there are traces of Persian culture as well.

It annoys me slightly to hear Pakistanis who are convinced we are descended more from Arabs/Persians and that even Urdu *our language* is 50% Persian. This is simply ridiculous. While it is true
some Pakistanis *mostly in Sindh in the south* do have Arab ancestry and that Urdu borrows more from Persian and Arabic than say Hindi, the spoken language is virtually identical.

An example of this is that people say they learn Hindi from Bollywood and just learned it from 'listening to it' rather than just accept the fact that we are speaking essentially the same language.
I believe people say this because it does not fall in the "national narrative" to say we are similar to Indians, when in fact there is probably no country we share more in common with.

Geographically yes, it is dependent on where you are. Culturally though we can say South Asian to be safe.

Indeed. Urdu was never widely used as the name of a language until the 20th century. There are only a handful of references to 'Urdu' as a language in Amir Khusro's writings. Hindi was always the preferred term, Dehlawi being another. Ironically, "Urdu" is not even the most widely spoken language in Pakistan. That honor goes to Punjabi. Placing Arabic and Persian vocabulary over an Indo-Aryan grammar does not make it Persian.
