    Usually the variety taken as a reference is the one from either the capital or largest/most important cities, unless there is a different kind of explanation (like the one for General American).

    So I'm not aware of how things are really in Brazil, but my guess would be that the 'reference' in the media (that is, for the news and most shows) should likely be the educated register of the variety spoken in the Rio-São Paulo area. But as I said, I don't know.

    As you can see, the main Spanish-speaking city in Spain where the TH sound is not made is Seville, West Andalusia. Which is probably why most Spaniards associate the Andalusian accent with the accent from that capital.

    But something people never talk about is the fact that the S is also different, in most of Spain being apico-alveolar, while Seville, the Canary Islands and Latin America have an English-like s.
    Not latin, my bad.

    I was talking about this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compar...nish#Sibilants

    The /s/ sound of s stays /s/ in both Portuguese and Spanish.
    The /z/ sound of -s- like in casa, becomes /s/ in Spanish.
    The /ts/ sound of c[e/i]/ç like in cego, becomes /s/ in Portuguese and /θ/ in Spanish.
    The /dz/ sound of z like in fazer, becomes /z/ in Portuguese and /θ/ in Spanish.

    Basically, in Portuguese:
    s and ts -> s
    z and dz -> z

    In Spanish:
    s and z -> s
    ts and dz -> θ

    Spanish devoiced while Portuguese deaffricated.

    But apparently, in some regions all those 4 sounds reduced to /s/.

    Ok, now I get it!

    Yes, exactly. Parts of Southern Spain -and therefore Latin America- reduced those four sounds to only one, /s/.

    But yes, in medieval times, both Portuguese and Spanish, and Catalan too, had all those seven sounds. Both Portuguese and Catalan have retained them all.

    The weirdest thing, if you ask me, is how Spanish changed the SH for the ugly jota sound:

    Portuguese/Catalan > CAIXA
    Spanish > CAJA /kahhhha/

    EDIT: Sorry I said that Portuguese and Catalan retained them all, I wasn't paying attention to the deaffrication. Catalan, yet, has /ts/ and /dz/ as independent sounds (potser 'maybe', tretze '13'). I'm not sure about Portuguese but I don't think so.

    I somewhat doubt it's IPA-compliant.

    Surprisingly, I've never created a sockpuppet on ABF, TA, or Stormfront. Only one account, and if I get banned, that's that.

    I'm known to troll a bit here and there, but I'd swear on the medieval Sicilian constitution, the Holy Bible, or whatever other texts have some sort of value to me.

    Lol. In any case, the poll to be accurate should include all the Romance languages, not just a few. Even so, people would still only vote for the few major ones they've heard about.

    Alb0z.

    For 600 years they have been our secret weapon. We only lost WWII because we attacked them beforehand.
