Take the little map in your signature, look at what the people living now in this space look like and you'll get roughly what the citizens back then looked like.

If you want to know what the Roman army looked like at a given time, take a map and look what land Rome owns, and what treaties Rome made with other peoples and tribes. The army towards the wars against the Gauls was probably darker than during the IIIrd century.
