10111 refuses to radio cops to murder scene

10111 is the South African equivalent of 911

Durban
- The 10111 police hotline failed to radio police to help a disabled man whose wife had been bludgeoned to death in their Durban home, the Sunday Tribune reported.

Edda Jumaima Botha was reportedly beaten to death in her home in Athlone Park early on Saturday morning.

Neighbours who raised the alarm told the newspaper they responded to calls for assistance from Botha's disabled husband.

Richard Allkins, from the Amanzimtoti Community Crime Prevention Organisation, was quoted as saying: "When we called 10111, there was an argument because the call operator wasn't prepared to send anyone out without the exact details of the victim and her injuries, which we didn't have at that moment."

"We finally flagged down a police van with members on a routine patrol. They couldn't believe that they hadn't been radioed immediately to come to the scene."

Colonel Jay Naicker reportedly confirmed the attack on Botha and urged "those who made the allegations [to] come forward so they can be investigated".
