Anyway I really don't understand this 'they want to steal our history' argument. The only thing that matters is the truth, and the truth about the Rus and company is still imo up there. After all all those chronicles were written hundreds of years after the supposed passing of this semi-mythological character.

The only historical fact here is that the author of Norman theory of Rus was a German Gerhard Miller who was working at St.Petersburg's University in 18th century. The other fact is he was badly beaten by Russian academic Lomonosov for spreading that nonsense
Miller was trying to prove an early Germanic presence in the old traditional Russian lands. He even published a work on the local toponyms around Russian North claiming all of these names having Germanic origin. Poor bastard couldn't understand that name like Kholmogory wasn't connected to German in any way but have pretty self-obvious meaning for any Slav
Everything else is just a theory and a mere speculations. The main argument for Norman theory is similarity of names Ruotsi and Rus. But toponim 'rus/ros' was widespread all over Slavic lands and all the way South to Crimea. Even Sarmatians had it, one of their tribes was called Roxalan/Rosalan. More to that the roots 'rus' and 'ros' have a clear meaning in Slavic languages. So saying it came from elsewhere doesn't make any sense be it Germanics, Turkics, Mongols or Martians, all these claims are equally retarded
PS btw the root 'rys' (means lynx) is also Slavic with same meaning across all Slavic languages. Interestingly it has etymology similar to the root 'rus': light/red colored hair pigmentaion.

It is undeniable fact that a Viking group called Varangians sailed down Western Russian rivers and established a trading empire centered on Kiev. Much of the Novgorodian and Kieven nobility were of Varangian origin. They weren't the majority though, obviously, the Novgorodian Republic and the Kievan Duchy were comprised mostly of Slavic peoples.
Hell, the Druzhina warriors of the Rus were modeled after typical Viking warriors, wearing light lamellar and leather and using axes to fight.
But anyway, I always thought Rus came from Ruthenians or something.
Oh and Btw, the Rus "Druzhina" comes from the old Germanic "Druhti".
