Where and why did you learn German?

My German is spotty, especially when it comes to the complexities of German grammar with are totally alien to me. My grandfather's first language is German, my dad speaks German, and I picked up some from them and from the film and television they watched. I would only class myself as a mediocre speaker though, so I've enrolled in a class at university to perfect it. So, sporadically throughout my childhood and since October at university.

*Edit* Where do I live, right. I was born in Westminster, London, and grew up in Hertfordshire. Currently I'm back in London. My family also has two farms in the Welsh mountains so I know the areas incredibly well and consider myself to have grown up, in part, in the Brecon Beacons.
