Default I1 in the (Spanish) Caribbean?

A Cuban friend of mine tested with 23andme and, according to them, his y-DNA is I1. It is my understanding that I1 is uncommon in Spain and Southern Europe in General but he says his paternal ancestry is Iberian and that he doesn't know of any Northern European ancestors.

How would I1 have gotten to the Caribbean? Are there any other Cubans, PRs or Dominicans with i1?

Could easily be from Iberia, it's fairly uncommon there, but after-all somebody has to make up the statistics, no matter how small. He's just unusual i guess.
Unless he shows some sort of northern European ancestry consistently on multiple tests (in terms of autosomal genetics) and on ancestry finder then it is probably direct from Iberia then.

It's interesting that in the I1 DNA project there's almost as many Puerto Rican I1's as Spanish. Either US influence counted for a lot or the Puerto Ricans are considerably oversampled.

Other settlers included Irish, Scots, Germans, Italians and thousands others who were granted land by Spain during the Real Cedula de Gracias de 1815 ("Royal Decree of Graces of 1815"), ...
That could explain it, considering that roughly 1/5 - 1/3 of these german settlers carried I1.

Well, Galicia has around 3-4% of I1, and Cubans have lot of galician ancestry

Interesting! Thanks for the responses. On the ancestry composition, he shows up as around 11% northern Euro (out of 75% euro). That means 15% of his European component is norther European. I know spanish people score it as well, so I'm not sure if it is indicative of recent Northern European ancestry or if it just comes from his spanish ancestors.

    Interesting, thanks!

I am also I1 but my paternal grandfather was Spanish. I find it interesting and a little bit surprising that the only 2 people of spanish descent I know who did 23andme were both I1, when it seems to be so uncommon in Spain itself.
