It's a basic polytheism, [each diety to a purpose] but when the Dutch slave traders brought slaves to catholic French colonies [Louisiana, Haiti], the African Vodun was masked with each diety taking on the form of a saint or folk-saint.
Vodou is Haitian and Vodun is the form you'll find in Benin. They are radically different in terms of how they are practiced, but to varying degrees share some characteristics. In Haiti there is a stronger Catholic element, while there is more of an "African" element in Benin. Different saints are associated with the loa/lwa. Different languages.
