    Default Home Recording Question

I hear that people sometimes record music in their own basements, and then put it on the internet. What type of recording gear does one have to get to do this?
I have been looking at this site.
    http://www.guitarcenter.com/

I also wonder what kinds of guitars people recommend for a first guitar? I see they have entry level Ibanez for ~$250, then up to Les Paul Standard for ~$450, and then up to the custom guitars for over $500. Is it worth the time trading up for new guitars after awhile, or should one just get a fairly nice one in the first place?

I'll give you a run down of the gear I used to record my demo (which you can listen to here):

    • Borrowed bass and keyboard (I don't remember the models)

I usually use Musicians Friend, but I've heard good things about Guitar Center too.

If you want to start doing any kind of recording I wouldn't mess with any guitar under the $400 mark.

Big thanks to Psychonaut and Lady Lyfing for replies.
I had guessed Psycho would have the most information, but then again you never know on a big forum. Also, I guessed other people might be interested in this sort of information.
