I was brought up athiest so I never outgrew it. To me it's only common sense but there are two types of atheist. Those who live and let live and those who are sensationalist and attacking (usually new athiests who were brought up religious).

I was young and I was a student in a catholical school. The executives of church-school and the priest, always hawking about these christian values, practically never applying it. So I realized that beliefs don't make people be 'good' nor make them to do 'good stuff'. In other words, you don't need god (religion) to be good.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

I outgrew my Christian phase when I was about 10(?) years old. I think it correlated with me developing logical thinking.
I don't really identify as an atheist though since I don't see it as a big part of me. It simply means that I'm not part of nor a believer in a childish, absurd organised cult/religion and it's vague omniscent sky-daddy. It's not a big part of my identity, just like not believing in ghosts or unicorns is a part of yours.

I went to some church meetings when I was a child because I was influenced from friends but even at a young age I could see what a crock it was. I never became a vehement scornful denier though. I was simply raised to think Christians needed an omniscient man in the sky to smooth over and give comfort of how hard life can be.

    Quite condescending, don't you think?

I can't see the future of course, but unless one of the thousands of gods that people claim to exist knocks on my door one day and performs a couple of miracles or two for me, I doubt I'll ever "outgrow" this "phase".

    Happened in reverse.

I outgrew my "Christian" Phase. Was baptized Episcopalian as a baby originally...became officially *Christian* in the very late teens, but never really felt right with it.

Renounced the whole lot a few years into my 20s and have happily remained an Agnostic Atheist ever since.
