    Default Switzerland

    Murders: 213
    Murders with firearms: 68
Murders with firearms (per capita): 0.00534117 per 1,000 people

The country has a population of six million, but there are estimated to be at least two million publicly-owned firearms, including about 600,000 automatic rifles and 500,000 pistols.

If guns cause crime, then matches cause arson.

Not suprising, the Swiss aren't full members of the EU. An Armed society is a dangerous one to uproot.
"Free, do you call yourself? Then I would hear your ruling thought, and not merely that you have escaped from a yoke. Are you one of those who had the right to escape from a yoke? Many a one has cast away his last worth when he has cast away his servitude. Free from what? What does that matter to Zarathustra! But your fiery eyes should tell me: free for what?" - Thus Spoke Zarathustra

Countries where it is relatively easy to own a gun or to get a permit for one and where people are acostumed to own guns have a population that typically behave in a very civilized and orderly way. They don't need a "Nanny Government" to look after them, and these liberties usually extend to other filelds. When the population leans towards irresponsibility and maybe, savagery, the government have to step in and liberties are lost. You have countries like Saudi Arabia where conflict among people may flare up easily so it seems only natural that a repressive State has to take charge lest the people end up massacring each other. Saddam Hussein had a tight control over the population and would chop you into pieces if you played smart. Now he's gone and you've got insurgents running amok.

Liberals like to propose punishments like the ones they have in advanced Scandinavia. Even for their own non-advanced countries. They think that authoritarian law is too restrictive and doesn't really work, so they they look at countries like Denmark, they notice how 'soft' the law is compared to their own countries and that crime rates are low so they think: "It must be because they have softer chastisements!". They arrive at the conclusion that it was the kind of punishment what molded Denmark into being what it is when it was possibly the other way around: having a responsible and civilized population is what permitted Denmark, or (Western?) Europe as a whole, to have the kind of "progressive" law system they have now.

Now you have the case of Muslims in Europe. It would seem that they are represented disproportionally in the crime rates. They come from restrictive and repressive societies and they view European punishment as a laugh riot, really: based on self-reflection when back home they are used to an iron fist.

I agree with what Rusalka said, except with the "progressiveness' of European law. Such a thing seldomly exists in the EU. The periphery on the other hand is a different story.
