Actually they have a respect for all life. If you can love a rat you can love anything.

Cow worship is quite archaic in India. Cows were respected cause they provided milk and were gifted to Brahmins in temples. So killing a cow is equivalent to: Killing a Brahmin and killing 'your mother'; cause it gives milk. It is really not worship or reverence of a God status, but high respect and abode for stature -to- a cow..!
