Default Capitalism and Communism - polar opposites, or two sides of the same coin?

Imo, Capitalism and Communism, far from being polar opposites with radically different viewpoints of the world, were two sides of the same coin - both believe(d) that humans are little more than economic machines, that money and material goods are ends in themselves; also, most crucially, they both believe(d) in exploiting nature (for human benefit) rather than protecting and conserving it. The only real argument between them - important though that may be to an extent - is/was regarding distribution and ownership. They do/did NOT, however, differ substantially in terms of what they think societies and individuals should mainly focus on, nor do/did they substantially differ in terms of how they believe humans ought to respect and interact with the natural world. What do you think?

Do you have any data to prove your hypothesis? Capitalists and communists regard each other as their greatest enemies, this alone would seem sufficient to dismiss your claim as bunk. All you have really done is state that capitalism and communism are both concerned with capital accumulation and social relations. A rather pedestrian observation given that they are two competing economic theories and economics by its very nature is a social science that studies the behaviour of economic actors and the management of resources.

My point is that they share the same basic assumptions about humanity, the natural world and what they consider to be "progress".

Which strand of communism are you referring to? There's quite a wide array of beliefs held within the spectrum- some are surprisingly right wing.

Bernstein, for example, was particularly averse to the notion of a spontaneous revolution. Instead he drew inspiration from the likes of Kant ( humans are of the same intrinsic worth) and promoted the utilization of the democratic method to empower the proletariat, which would eventually create the necessary conditions for a dictatorship of the worker which would become superseded by a "classless" society.

I have the feeling "communism" in the question's context refers to "dialectical materialism" which stipulates that history has hitherto been a class war and further states the transition that society will undergo ( already mentioned) to achieve a totally egalitarian society.

Yes, I mostly mean materialistic Marxism.
