Default 99th Anniversary of Gallipoli Victory, 18th of March

Turkey commemorates its martyrs on the 99th anniversary of the Ottoman victory during World War I over Allied fleets attempting to break through the Dardanelles Strait in the North-Western province of Çanakkale.

"Deprived of modern weapons of any kind, the people of Turkey united and fought against the best-equipped armies of the day to forge an unforgettable and glorious history. This victory also serves as a symbol and a source of inspiration for other nations waging a struggle for their independence and liberty."

    Fierce battle in Dardenelles

The Allies in the First World War attempted a naval breakthrough in March 1915 through the Dardanelles Strait with the aim of capturing the Ottoman capital of Istanbul and securing a much-needed sea route to Russia. After a number of British and French capital ships were either sunk or damaged, however, the Allies were forced to abandon the naval campaign.

The Gallipoli battle also marked the rise of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk as an Ottoman commander, as he served there as an officer. Around 1 million troops, including many Australians and New Zealanders, participated in the trench warfare in Gallipoli, which is regarded as a defining moment in the history of the Turkish nation.

    * An Anzac soldier is seen giving water to a wounded Turkish soldier during the Battle of Gallipoli.

    * An iconic character of the Battle of Gallipoli, Corporal Seyit, is seen in this undated photo. Corporal Seyit is known for carrying three 275 kg shells to an artillery piece that reputedly sank the HMS Ocean.

    * Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, mastermind of the victory at Gallipoli land battle and later, the founder of modern Turkey, is seen surveying the battlefield in one of his most memorable photographs.

    * Numerous high-schools had no male graduates in 1915-16 as all of them died during the clashes at the Battle of Gallipoli.

The giant sign at the entrance of Dardanelles Strait today. "Stop, passenger. This land which you step on and pass by, is where an era has perished."

Land battles on the peninsula were fought after 18th march. On March 18th 1915, British-French warships launched their last decisive amphibious assault.
It was repelled. After naval assault and attempt to reach Istanbul failed, Franco-English allies decided to land troops.

French warship Bouvet and British warships Ocean and Irresistible were sunk. Several other warships of the allies were heavily damaged and their fleet returned back off Aegean.

Too bad the Turks got lucky with bad planning and execution by Allies. The Allies should have smashed the Turks and take Constantinople.

On this day 103 years ago their warships were sunk. Later they landed and Turks repelled the land assault too.
It was game changer. Russian Tsar couldn't receive help to sustain war efforts against Germany and to crush social unrest. As a result, Russia fell to Bolsheviks
