    Default St. Cecilia Novena

    St. Cecilia Novena

St. Cecilia is the Patron Saint of Music and one of the most famous of the Roman martyrs.

Despite her vow of virginity, she was forced by her parents to marry a pagan nobleman named Valerian. During the wedding, Cecilia sat apart singing to God in her heart, and for that she was later declared the saint of musicians.

Cecilia told her husband that an angel was watching over her and that she had made a promise of virginity to God. He said he would respect her virginity if he could also see the angel. After being baptized he saw the angel and was converted to Christianity, his brother was also converted by the angel.

Her martyrdom followed that of her husband Valerian and his brother. Cecilia was struck three times on the neck with a sword; she lived for three days before dying.

Cecilia was buried and in 1599, her body was found still incorrupt many years later.

    Default St. Clare Novena

    St. Clare Novena

St. Clare, also known as St. Clare of Assisi, was 18 years old when she heard St. Francis of Assisi preaching. His teachings influenced her to change her whole life and dedicate it to God. She became the first female, “Franciscan”. Clare and Francis became lifelong friends and he was her spiritual guide.

Clare founded the Franciscan Nuns of the Second Order: the “Poor Clares”. The Poor Clares depended only on almsgiving and had complete faith on God to provide for them through other people. She and her order lived a simple life of poverty, austerity and seclusion from the world. They went barefoot, slept on the ground, did not eat meat and observed silence.

Clare lived in the convent of San Damiano in Assisi and she served the sick, washed the feet of beggars, and prayed fervently. Although she never left the convent, she had such a great influence that popes, cardinals and bishops often came to consult her. Her Feast-day is August 11th, but you can pray her novena at anytime.

    Novena Prayers

    Day 1
    :

Dearest Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We praise you and the fruits of your grace that manifested themselves in your poor and gracious servant, Saint Clare. Through her intercession we come to you like little children to ask that you not only grant us the requests in our hearts but also that we may live as Saint Clare did in Your heart.

Most Holy Saint Clare, you were the first disciple of Saint Francis of Assisi. You abandoned all of your riches for a life of sacrifice, service and poverty in order to follow the Lord, Our God, through the Gospel. You are certainly rejoicing with God in Heaven and so we ask that you obtain for us from God the grace of…

    (Mention your intentions here).

We are inspired by your words, “On earth, may He increase [His] grace and virtues among [His] servants and handmaids of His Church Militant. In heaven, may He exalt and glorify you in His Church Triumphant among all His men and women saints.”

Most Holy Saint Clare, we strive to be virtuous like you. We strive to be saints like you. We strive to follow the Divine Will. We strive to trust in the providence of God in our lives. Enter our hearts and make us holy!

    Saint Clare, Pray for us!

That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

    Amen.

Through her intercession we come to you like little children to ask that you not only grant us the requests in our hearts but also that we may live as Saint Clare did in Your heart.

Saint Clare, as a young girl you left everything and gave your life to God and to the poorest of the poor in your native town of Assisi. You were inspired by the words of St. Francis who pointed you in the direction of Jesus and the Most Blessed Sacrament. Please pray for us…

    (Mention your intentions here)

… that I will seek Jesus as our first love and please help us to grow in love so that we may care for the poor and offer our everyday lives to God.

We are inspired by your words, “The kingdom of heaven is promised and given by the Lord only to the poor: for he who loves temporal things loses the fruit of love.”

Saint Clare, intercede for us! That we may not seek to obtain physical objects but that we may seek the love of God! For we know that temporal objects will not satisfy the needs of our hearts. The longing we feel will only be fulfilled when our hearts rest in Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Most Holy Saint Clare, we strive to be poor of spirit like you. We strive to be saints like you. We strive to follow the Divine Will. We strive to trust in the providence of God in our lives. Enter our hearts and make us holy!

Through her intercession we come to you like little children to ask that you not only grant us the requests in our hearts but also that we may live as Saint Clare did in Your heart.

Blessed St. Clare we are inspired by your words,

“With swift pace, light step, unswerving feet, so that even your steps stir up no dust, may you go forward securely, joyfully, and swiftly, on the path of prudent happiness, not believing anything that would dissuade you from this resolution or that would place a stumbling block for you on the way, so that you may offer your vows to the Most High in the pursuit of that perfection to which the Spirit of the Lord has called you.”

Saint Dymphna was born in Ireland during the 7th century. Her feast day is traditionally celebrated on May 15; but of course, you can pray through her intercession any time!

Saint Dymphna is usually associated with accounts of miraculous cures of mental illness and she is often invoked for those inflicted with emotional and mental distress.

    St. Dymphna Novena Prayers

    Day 1: For Faith

O God, Source of our salvation, in the midst of a pagan people, Thou didst enlighten St. Dymphna by the light of the true faith, which she professed under the guidance of her holy confessor, Gerebran, with such constance that she suffered martyrdom. Through the intercession of these two saints, we beg Thee to strengthen the faith which Thou hast given us, so that by wisely subjecting our souls to Thy Supreme Authority, and by faithfully conforming our lives according to our faith, we may honor Thee with our whole heart and soul until the hour of our death. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be five times

    Day 2: For Hope

Almighty and infinitely good God, Thou hast promised eternal salvation to those who obey Thy commandments and make zealous use of Thy graces. Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, who fled from the danger of sin by leaving the palace of her father, and who, eager to gain eternal salvation, fled to Belgium to live in poverty, we beg Thee to grant that we also, who are striving for eternal happiness, may overcome all obstacles in the way of virtue and may attain eternal salvation. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be five times

    Day 3: For Charity

God of love, Thou art the most perfect Being, and Creator of all that is good and beautiful. Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, who in her youth loved Thee above all creatures and for Thy sake loved her neighbor as herself, as the image and likeness of Thee, as the price of the Blood of Jesus and as co-heir of heaven, be pleased to help us by Thy powerful grace, that we may faithfully fulfill the two great commandments of charity not only in word, but in action and in truth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be five times

    Day 4: For Piety

God, Our Creator and Supreme Master, St. Dymphna served Thee with great zeal even in her childhood, by hearing Thy word with delight, by assisting at Holy Mass with fervent reverence, and by receiving Holy Communion from the hand of St. Gerebran with tender devotion. Through her intercession we beg Thee to grant us the same virtue of piety so that, having honored Thee during this life as our Creator, we may possess Thee hereafter as our final reward. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be five times

    Day 5: For Prudence

O God, ruler of the universe, Thou didst allow St. Dymphna to discover a helpful means of avoiding the evil intentions of her father. Through the merits of Thy holy servant, be pleased to grant that we may become, according to the words of Jesus, simple as doves and wise as serpents, so that through prudent advice and sound judgment we may recognize what we must do to achieve the great work of our salvation. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be five times

    Day 6: For Justice

O God, source of eternal justice, Thou didst inspire St. Dymphna to flee from her country and her father in order to render to Thee that which was Thine. Through her intercession we beg Thee to make us seek after justice so that we may perform our duties toward Thee as we ought. Though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be five times

    Day 7: For Fortitude

O God, rewarder of those who remain firm in their good resolutions, Thou gavest St. Dymphna such a love of virtue that she had the courage to suffer privation, persecution, and even martyrdom. Through her prayers we beg Thee to grant us fortitude that we may courageously and perseveringly overcome ourselves and finally conquer the enemy of our salvation. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be five times

    Day 8: For Temperance

O God, You made St. Dymphna resplendent in the virtue of temperance so that she mastered sensual inclinations and used temporal goods prudently. With temperance she combined the beautiful virtues of modesty, docility and humility. Let us not forget that humility is called the foundation of all virtue because it banishes from the soul pride, the obstacle to grace. Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, we beg Thee to guide and direct us, so that being preserved from evil and nervous disorders, we may obey till death the commandments and counsels Thou hast given us. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be five times

    Day 9: For Chastity

O God, lover of innocent souls, Thou gavest St. Dymphna the virtue of angelic purity which made her reserved in all her actions, modest in her dress, attentive in her conversation, upright in her character, so that she even shed her blood to preserve this precious virtue. Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, we beg thee to bestow upon us the virtue of chastity that we may enjoy peace of conscience in this life and pure eternal joys of heaven hereafter. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be five times

    More About St. Dymphna

We don’t know very much about Saint Dymphna. A lot of the history that we do know comes from oral tradition and written stories. But what we do know is that she was born in the 7th century in Ireland to a beautiful devout Christian mother, and to a pagan father who was also an Irish Chief.

When her mother died, her father became immensely depressed, and Saint Dymphna also suffered during that time. Her father looked for a replacement wife, and he was told by his advisors to pursue his daughter as his new wife.

Driven mad by his depression, he made advances on his daughter. Saint Dymphna fled to Belgium with her confessor and took refuge in a Chapel near the present day site of Gheel. Her father’s spies, however, tracked her down and her father found begged Dymphna to return to Ireland with him.

Dymphna refused, and her father decapitated her. At the time, she was only 15 years old.

A shrine was built on the spot where she was buried in Gheel, Belgium, and many miracles have taken place there since.

Default St. Gianna Beretta Molla Novena

    St. Gianna Beretta Molla Novena

Saint Gianna Beretta Molla was a physician, surgeon and pediatric doctor. Her work in the medical field was her “mission” and she worked especially with mothers, babies, the elderly and the poor.

She married and dedicated herself to “forming a truly Christian family”. She had three children and during her fourth pregnancy, Gianna developed a fibroma on her uterus. She refused an abortion that would save her life and chose to save the baby’s life instead.

She gave birth to a healthy baby, however, Gianna died 7 days later. In the homily at her canonization Mass, Pope John Paul II called Gianna a “significant messenger of divine love.” Saint Gianna is the patron of mothers, physicians and unborn children.

Saint Gianna Beretta Molla Novena Prayers

Dear holy servant of God, Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, we pray to you because you were once the selfless and suffering mother who chose the life of her child over her own life. Your faithfulness to God brought you so close to God that you are now resting in His divine splendor. We humbly pray for your holy intercession.

    (Mention your intentions here)

In the midst of your suffering you continued your mission to care for the sick, needy and weak. And so we bring our needy hearts to you and ask that you pray for us to God our Father…

Day 1: Pray for all those who suffer from infertility or miscarriage. That they may be comforted.
Day 2: Pray for us, that we may be filled with love for children.
Day 3: Pray for us, that we may seek the will of God in all things.
Day 4: Pray for us, that we may be generous with those in need.
Day 5: Pray for us that we may be patient in suffering.
Day 6: Pray for all those who work in the field of medicine, that they may know the dignity of the human person.
Day 7: Pray for us, that we may be witnesses to the sanctity of human life.
Day 8: Pray that there may be an end to abortion.
Day 9: Pray for all mothers, that they may be the face of God within their families.

Most holy Saint Gianna, you said “yes” to the new life of your baby, generously sacrificing your own life. Show us how to say “yes” as you did to God’s will so that we may come to eternal rest with God in heaven.

    Hail Mary…

    Glory Be…

Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, pray for us!

    Amen.

Default St. Joan of Arc Novena

    St. Joan of Arc Novena

The feast day of Saint Joan of Arc is traditionally celebrated on May 30th as it was the day that she was burned at the stake in Rouen, France; but of course, you can pray through her strong intercession any time!

Since the creation of her feast day, Saint Joan of Arc has been one of the most popular saints in the history of the Catholic Church. It actually took more than 400 years after her death until she was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.

Saint Joan, also known as the Maid of Heaven, is often invoked for strength and courage, which she herself exemplified throughout her life as she followed God’s direction and led the French army to several victories during the Hundred Years.

    About St. Joan of Arc

Saint Joan of Arc was born on January 6, 1412 to very pious parents in Domremy, France. At a very early age, she heard the voice of God in her father’s garden, followed later by hearing the voices of Saint Michael, St. Catherine and St. Margaret. These voices told her to go to the King of France to help him reconquer France’s liberty.

After much opposition, Saint Joan was finally given a small army that raised a siege at Orleans. This was the first of many battles that the French army won by her leadership and guidance. Furthermore, those victories led to the coronation of Charles VII, which was a central part of her mission.

After King Charles VII’s coronation, however, Saint Joan was captured and sold to the British, who only saw her as a heretic. The British put her on trial, and after refusing to retract her statements that the voices she heard were from the saints of God, the British then convicted and sentenced her to burn at the stake. She was condemned to death as a heretic, sorceress and adulteress. She was nineteen years old.

“I fear nothing for God is with me,” she said.

When she was being burned at the stake, she asked someone to make a small crucifix which she put in the top of her dress, while a priest held one up for her to look at as she died. Witnesses said she met her fate with composure and bravery.

Many stories assert that Saint Joan of Arc’s heart did not burn with the rest of her body, and that the English ultimately threw her remains and ashes into the Seine River so there wouldn’t be any relics.

Traditional St. Joan of Arc Novena Prayers

    Opening prayer:

Eternal Father, you gave us Saint Joan of Arc through your infinite love and mercy for us. We humbly ask that you send down your Holy Spirit upon us, as Your Spirit is the intermediary by which the Word goes forth from your lips and reaches the ears of the faithful. Allow me to be a witness to your Son Jesus Christ just as St. Joan of Arc was. Oh, Jesus, grant me the courage to do your will, that I may be in one accord with our Father in Heaven. I thank you for the gift of your love, which I hope to one day fully understand.

    Petition Prayer:

Say 19 Our Fathers, followed by “St. Joan of Arc, by your powerful intercession, hear and answer me.”

When you finish, say the following prayer:

Saint Joan of Arc, patron of France, my patron saint, I ask you now to fight this battle with me by prayer, just as you led your troops to victory in battle. You, who were filled with the Holy Spirit and chosen by God, help me this day with the favor I ask

    [here say your intention].

Grant me by your divine and powerful intercession, the courage and strength I need to endure this constant fight. Oh St. Joan, help me to be victorious in the tasks God presents to me.
I thank you and ask you for your continuing protection of God’s people.

    Closing Prayer:

Sweet Saint Joan, plead for me before the throne of almighty God that I may be deemed worthy to be granted the request I have asked. Help me, Saint Joan, to be more like you in the attempt to love the Lord with all my heart, soul, and mind. Through your guidance and prayer help me to be a truly devout and loving Christian, that I may both know and see the will of God. Help me now St. Joan, in my time of need. I ask that you may always be near me guiding me closer each day to Jesus. Thank you Saint Joan for having heard my prayer.

    Amen.

    St. Therese the Little Flower

St. Therese is also known as the Little Flower. This is because those who receive miracles by her intercession are often given roses or flowers as a sign. She is sometimes called St. Therese of the child Jesus as well. Although she goes by several names, she is just one great saint!
