A record number of babies were born in Finland in 2009. According to preliminary data from Statistics Finland, 60,100 babies were delivered in Finland this year. The last time Finland experienced such a baby boom was in 1996.
Some 5,351,000 people are estimated to live in Finland by the end of this year. The number of people residing in Finland has increased by 25,000 from the previous year. About 10,500 people moved to Finland from abroad in 2009, which is roughly the same number as in 2008.
Population increases were highest in the regions of Uusimaa and Pirkanmaa. The population in the regions of South Savo and Kainuu decreased.
