TBH as a Balkanite I wouldn't consider myself white from a Western POV. We have so much culture and history especially with non-Europeans that have made us very very different from Western Europeans. We are a unique people, not "white".

Italian-Americans in US are mostly of Southern Italian stock and they are white to everyone here, well at least on east coast

These are by far predominantly «members» of the Mediterranid race by excellence. They are White in North America. Though some may be seen as White Hispanic in the Midwest, South and NE of the US. In other parts of Europe, Australia the darkest ones might confused with Middle-Easterners at first sight. In most of Europe, the term «White» is not really used rather «European» so they are European. In Australia, they might be derogatorily called Wogs.

They might get mistaken for middle eastern in Germany, or rather Turkish (Turks themselfes say they are not Middle Eastern but they might get mistaken for Turkish maybe not middle eastern). There have been cases where Greeks were victims of skinheads and turks saved their lifes, i didnt heard such a thing about Italians but i guess if it is true for Greeks it must be true for Italians too.

The Turk-Greek thing in Germany is done on purpose and has been since a long time. Nobody mistakes a Greek for a Turk and vice versa (different language, religion, different shops, neighbourhoods), that's fairy tales from german authorities to cover up the incidents that happened. The two most criticized immigrant groups were Turks first and Greeks second . Those two used to be the two biggest non-western immigrant groups in Germany and were hated together for that.
