    What? How sure are you of that? But in any case, 300 years is a long time in modern history -- 300 years ago was before electricity, cars, most modern nation states even. The United States of America has only existed for 243 years as of today.

    There was no Ukraine at that time. The Southern half of present day Ukraine was made of Tatar Khanates (Central Asians), the northern half was a military frontier inhabited by Cossacks (Slavo-Tatars) and some Ukrainian peasants. Only the Western corner of Ukraine was populated by a stable population (Rusyns), but it was part of Poland (though Poland was getting partitioned). Like I said, there were no Russians back then in Ukraine.
