Edit: But to be honest, i never really understood this argument. Do you think that a group of citizens with firearms is going to stop a modern military? It may be deterring slightly, but in a real conflict situation the rebels would get smoked. Look what's happening in Syria and Syria's military is nowhere near as advanced as Russia or the West.

People think that the right to bear arms is going to protect them against the government. But just like 1stLightHorse said; it isn't 1776 anymore and the government has helicopters, jets, tanks, rockets, etc now. A gun isn't going to protect you from the government.

Tell that to these people. The threat of a shootout with citizens is a big deterrent. The public outcry would be immense if anyone died over some stupid cows and turtles. That right there is proof of how armed citizens can stop perceived government abuse.

Even in 1776 it would have required a revolt on a very large scale to be able to overthrow the government me thinks, and when it's on such a large scale disobedience would probably be very high amongst the military, don't you think?
