You have to watch what you eat. I had gotten some weight myself so I started going to the gym. I started easy by walking and running for like 5 minutes in a thread mill. I would also use the Auto Trainer machine "AMT", for like 5 minutes, I would also do some weights with the machines. Now after almost a year I run 2 miles 4 times a week (on track or street), I do weights with dumb bells and lots of abs exercises. I am almost as slim as when I was 22 and I feel great.
The second part to this is that I quit smoking, quit drinking pop and alcohol, reduced meal portions, specially dinner, avoid eating sugary desserts (that's most desserts) at least until I had lost enough weight, remove excess stuff such as mayo or fatty salad dressing. Watch what you drink, "healthy" smoothies are loaded with calories and sugar that make you fat, drink water instead. Snacking in a big one too, remove snacks and eat your meals only. You will be a bit hungry for a couple of months, but your body adjusts and you realize you do not need that much food. I eat a lot less now and have far more energy and strength. My stomach is flat and arms and chest full. My wife can't keep her hands off me now a days. I myself just like you was in good shape before I put on the weight.
"I don't dislike you, I simple don't care!"

I have lost 35 kg since 2010. That makes 77 lbs I think. I didnt follow any special diet list or didnt go to a doctor. I just ate less and did some exercise. After a while, body gets used to it and you dont feel hungry or desperate.
