If history had been different, Ukrainians may have simply been fully incorporated into the Russian nation. But the relationship between Ukrainians and Russians is poisoned, for various reasons. The Donbass War since 2014 has only further distanced Ukrainians from Russians.

Western Ukraine is older and colonization of land was from the west to the east. This is only different in case of these parts of Eastern and Southern Ukraine, which were colonized from Russia:

the frirst way of colonization of western ukraine was from territory of russia and by russians too. But after first olrarch revolurion in 11 st these olgarchs sold asses to poland and poles for centuries made from aborigens cattle, and they gor sucsess. And unfortunately polish colonization of wild fields was failed.

we're still be the same etnicity even now despite strong antirussian propaganda for some dozens of years. And yes, ukrainian isn't separate language, but russian-polish pidgin even now, cause almost all grammatic constructions are similar to russian, but about of 30-40% words from polish vocabulary in best case scenario, and it's so hard to differentiate its more or less correctly cause russian and polish are extremly close languages even now.
