I never heard of anyone being lactose intolerant until I came to USA. Everyone in my house always drank Yogurt for breakfast. If you were sick, people believed yogurt (with garlic) is only thing you could eat until healthy. I cannot imagine how lactose intolerant person would survive in such culture

Yeah, cool. I think the last time I tried to change categories in a poll I lost all the results, so that's why I didn't touch it.

I can digest milk probably better than anybody in my family, 23andme predicts that I'm likely tolerant and I'm homozygous for lactose tolerance (AA), but I don't drink it, not because I can't tolerate the lactose but because it is just outright disgusting. Just thinking about drinking milk makes me gag! I used to drink milk until I was about 5, then for some reason I must have developed an aversion to it.

My sister claims to be lactose intolerant and says she can't drink milk without getting sick. My mom can drink milk, but she says that she gets a stomach ache when she eats ice cream, so she claims to be "slightly lactose intolerant". Which makes sense because although 23andme says she is "likely tolerant", she is heterozygous (AG) which means she carries one lactose intolerant allele.

My paternal grandfather is lactose intolerant according to 23andme, he is homozygous for lactose intolerance (GG). That would mean my father was either AG or GG, though I don't think he is intolerant, so probably AG.

Maybe my sister was unfortunate enough to get the GG intolerant version from two AG (tolerant) parents!

I don't consume that much milk but i do consume lots of cheese and yogurts. I don't have any problems with them.

When I was younger I could drink it without fusss now I have problems with digesting it so I could be lactose intolerant (though unverified by medical test).

Europe isn't divided into a North and a South with an fuzzy, undefined, mixed Center.

This being said, I've had milk-based products everyday for most of my life and I digest it perfectly.
    Strange divide indeed.

Oh well ... I can drink youghurt but milk from carton makes me sick if I drink more than one glass per day. I think that's because lactose (sugar in milk) gets partially fermented in it making those saccharides easier to digest.
