Ukrainian identity was formed in the 20th century. Until the 20th century, Ukrainians called themselves Russians. Imagine that part of Croatia will no longer consider itself a Croat due to external political influence. How do you react to this? Will you let go of this part of Croatia or will you fight for it? I have Ukrainian blood, and I understand how close the South Russian people are to the eastern Ukrainians, they are almost identical .. The Western Ukrainians are identical to the Poles ... My Eastern Ukrainian ancestors never considered Western people to be their people. Eastern Ukrainians considered Western Ukrainians to be part of the Polish people. And eastern Ukrainians called themselves Kozaks and Cherkes. Today, Ukrainian propaganda united incompatible nations. If Western Ukraine becomes part of Poland, I will welcome it. It will be the happiest day of my life.

West Ukrainians will never become Polish because they are orthodox or Greek-Catholic, and Poles are hardcore Roman Catholic. I know too well how these two faiths can never successfully mix.
If they have Ukrainian identity now you can't force them to abandon it. Pretty sure they were never Polish either but simply orthodox Ruthenian.
It isn't any lesser identity than Bosniak or North Macedonian. Nations are organic things mate, they come and go it's forever changing process.
Ukraine should show good will towards Russia and cede Russian-majority regions in east to your country, and than you should let them do their own thing imo.

we in the Carpathians (Ukrainian-inhabited region in northern Romania) still call ourselves руснаки and the language руський.
I think all East Slavs belong together - Ruthenians, Hohols, Bilorussians, Russians.
"Ukrainian" language is actually more archaic than Russian and is the most direct and closest descendant of early Medieval (Eastern) Slavic - Muscovites in a way appropriated the "Russky" identity since it was one of prestige from Malorussians, if you want. anyway, Western Ukrainians are not Poles, I still think they belong with Eastern Slavs. though it is true we go along nicely with Czechoslovaks and Poles as well.
as for the territory, I would allow local people decide through voting - if people in Crimea and Donetsk/Lugansk want to unite with Russia, why not let them do so. especially Crimea, that was never Ukrainian. also, I don't understand why doesn't Moldova recognize Transnistria (Pridnestrovie), they have absolutely nothing to gain from not recognizing it - they could as well become de jure part of Russia, they're anyway de facto.
so all in all I think people are a bit too nationalistic (all the sides involved in Eastern conflicts) and should become more practical and business oriented. these conflicts ruin business. wellbeing/democracy/free speech/free market is more important than language/nation and historical arrogance/ignorance bla bla.

Not so simple. In eastern Ukraine, including in the Donbas, the majority are Ukrainians. However, for these Ukrainians, Russians are closer in mentality. This was the case throughout Eastern Ukraine until 2014. The revolution in Ukraine was made by Western Europe, it is an artificial rejection of a part of the Russian people. And it is impossible to put up with it.
