Though there are some pretty good arguments for the Crete/Thera hypothesis, I think the best candidate is Doggerland in the North Sea.

Because he is a philosopher , he basically said that an advanced culture was already there in 9600BC which conquered most of Europe and other parts and in the end got defeated by Athens and disappeared. The is no reason to believe that there was such an Atlantis but maybe, maybe there was something similar, some Island colony or something who's power he then exheggerated using various resources, maybe that Atlantis exists and maybe that Atlantis is buried in southern Spain...who knows.
