When it is pointed out that the Soviet Union was even more murderous and tyrannical - and certainly a lot more corrupt and incompetent - than Nazi Germany, many people respond that "Communism was good in principle, whereas Nazism wasn't".
Putting to one side all the lofty rhetoric, Communism mostly revolved around four things, all of which (except maybe the last) had the seeds of despotism and violence sowed within them:
(1) Class hatred, of a kind that was just as bigoted and fanatical as the racial hatreds that characterised Nazism.
(2) A belief in an all-encompassing, extremely powerful and interventionist State.
(3) Disrespect towards private property and the individual.
(4) A flawed belief in economic equality, where everybody ought to earn roughly the same regardless of talent, hard work, intelligence or qualifications.
At this point, I hasten to add that I am very much a social democrat, and I deplore the excesses, greed and exploitation of the so-called "free-market". Nevertheless, the manifest failings of Communism - both in principle AND in practice - should be evident for any right-minded individual to see.
