A useful and interesting document here looking at statistical changes in various figures in the UK between 1901 and 1999.

One of the most interesting things here is the halving of the fertility rate and the average lifespan increasing by around 50% in the period. Also, people are significantly less likely to die below the age of 60 than they were in 1901, mainly due to the changes in causes of death and improvement in healthcare. This of course has both good and bad implications.
