Important Hungarian victory which stopped Ottoman progress into Europe for 70 years.

Actually Mehmet II enjoys fame in Turkey, among the not-so-educated part of the population but to be honest he was not the best of Ottoman marshalls.

When his father Murat II crushed the Varna Crusade in 1444, Istanbul and Byzantium were like doomed.
It was done with Byzantium, as all possible helps to Byzantium was cut once and for all.
Only a good siege would be enough and it has been enough in 1453.
He took what was left from Byzantines too: Trabzon, Morea and Epirus.

Mehmet II later failed in Belgrade. He also failed to crush quickly the Albanian rebels led by Scanderberg.

Mehmet II and his son Bayezid II were good diplomats but not good marshalls.
He doesn't have major pitched battle victory against a strong European or Greek kingdom.

Later, however, Selim I and Suleyman I were good marshalls like Murat II.
