Default Filipino Customs and Tradition (Getting to know the Filipinos)

Various influences from the Malay, Spaniards, Chinese, Mexican, Americans etc. who have infused blood and practices from centuries back have turned the Filipino into the unique individual that he is and that some people usually get confused.

Among the most common traits the Filipino possesses is hospitality. In the Filipino house the visitor is royalty, and no expense or effort is spared in making the guest feel most comfortable and cared for. Anyone who drops by a Filipino household at meal times is invited to join the meal, whether or not the guest is hungry.

Close family ties is another common trait among Filipinos. The core Filipino family includes not only the parents and children, but also grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins and other immediate relatives. Filipino children are taught good manners and proper conduct by their elders, like kissing their parents’ hand or the mano as a sign of respect when they get home from school. Even as they mature as adults, this practice is maintained. Although, there is also negative side that Children should learn to be independent as they grow old.

    Respectful to the elderly

^We call this 'Mano' or 'Bless' as a sign of respect.

You will always hear most Filipinos used to say 'PO', 'OPO', 'HO', 'OHO'. When a much older person ask the young Filipinos, they used to reply these word or used usually at the end of the sentence in Filipino Language or hear them calling their big sister (Ate), or big brother (Kuya)

This is Harana which used to Serenade or how the old Filipinos used
to court ladies specially from the Barrios some still exist until today but other used a bit of modern music lol like this website Harana.ph (http://harana.ph/)

Filipino are religious - it's either animist, catholic or muslims etc.

    - Before the introduction of Christianity or islam etc, the Filipinos were mostly pagans. They worshipped spirits which they believed dwell in objects like trees, mountains, rivers, etc. They worshipped nature, the sun the moon, and the stars. They also believed in a supreme God or deity. Because of their belief in a deity and in animate or living things their religion was called animo-delsm.

^Catholic Church is against this flagellation, but some Filipinos still
    do it.

    Bayanihan
Filipino term taken from the word bayan, referring to a nation, town or community. The whole term bayanihan refers to a spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular objective. This good custom is widespread in the Philippines, in fact many ethnolinguistic groups have their own term for "bayanihan".

The Waray people of Leyte call it tiklos while those in Samar call it pintakasi. The Ivatans of Batanes call it kapanyidungan. Other Tagalog people also call it bataris or bataresan.
The origin of the term bayanihan can be traced from a common tradition in Philippine towns where community members volunteer to help a family move to a new place. The process involves literally carrying the house to its new location. This is done by putting bamboo poles forming a strong frame to lift the stilts from the ground and carrying the whole house with the men positioned at the ends of each pole.

Bayanihan is a very old Filipino tradition that symbolizes unity or effort to achieve a common goal specially used during the calamities to work one another for all of us to survive.
