He did a bit. I spent every summer with my dad on our family farm all growing up. He and my grandmother, uncles, and aunts all spoke Spanish when together, and though they would teach me little bits here and there, I didn't learn to speak it fluently. Though when I was 1 to around 4 years old he hired a live in nanny for me when I lived with my mother. She was from Guatemala. Because I spent 90% of my time with her and she spoke only Spanish, I was starting to speak Spanish as my first language when I was learning to talk. I have vague memories, but that is what my mother told me. I think I am picking it up pretty fast now. I just need to keep practicing.

If you get bored of Duolingo (usually happens), look for the Michel Thomas tapes. He is very good on giving people a foundation on language and the method is very active and straightforward. It's my way of learning Italian at the moment, whenever my frail discipline allows me.
Also, my actual Spanish teachers were Luis Alberto Spinetta and Charly García, other than authors like Cortazar, Jorge Luis Borges and Horacio Quiroga and film like Okupas, El Secreto de Sus Ojos, La Historia Oficial, Whisky and whatever Argentinian/Uruguayan stuff I could get my hands on. But use these media reccomendations cautiously if you don't want to sound like an Argentine![]()
