Probably about 18 million out of approximately 82 million, so less than 25%. So, in general closer to French.

Depends on the "French". France has quite a big genetic landscape (for European standards).

There are quite a few who have that Celtic look, especially in Brittany.

I have read though (perhaps here) that up to approximately 25% of eastern Germany is likely R1a.
That is probably right, and no surprise, the area was inhabited by Western Slavs, the Wends.

*cough* Slavic impact in Bavaria was minor! East-Austrians are rather slavic influenced but the western part of Austria and Bavaria not really, Bavarians genetically fall in this West-German-South-Dutch-French-Alpine-cluster, East-Austrians cluster with czechs and East-Germans, they're certainly admixed and you can certainly see it in the Gedmatch-results of some members here (including me, see my result, I am Bavarian/Danube-Swabian and Noricums result and you'll see the difference).

Hello. First post so forgive my mistakes

France is a much more diverse country than Germany & Ostmark.
However I think it is important to differentiate the "common French" with the "Minority regions" which do not represent French ethnicity.

    By minority regions I mean
    - Alsace. Some parts of Lorraine. (definitely different from rest of France)
    - Bretagne. (very different phenotypes. Look very Celtic -pale, black or red haired- than rest of France)
    - Basque
    - Alpes Maritimes: This region is very unique. Ethnically the original habitants are Alpine Gauls/Celts. But you could discount this as in 2014 due to many population movements, the original Alpes Maritimes French have very much disappeared (Parisians, people from all over France and Europe move to French riviera nowadays).

However...If you talk about the "Average French", whether in Paris or central France, he looks identical to the Western German.
Note by Western German, I differentiate from the Northern Germans (who look scandinavian) and Eastern Germans.

Its clear that the Ancient Empire of Charlemagne which united this central Rhine region, represents the core of France and Germany.
Ironically, these same people would be massacring each other during WW1 and thinking that they were different from one another.

Also I know this is no topic...But being from Austria (Styria), I am curious of this belief that Austria is Eastern.
I have noticed that Bavarians have more Eastern phenotype than we Austrians. For example people from Tyrol look very Germanic and look nothing like Bavarians.
The only exception is Vienna area but alot of people there are not true Austrians but second or third generation from Slovakia or Hungary and so on.

I am new to these forums, but do you consider Arnold Schwarzenegger phenotype to be R1a or Eastern?
I say this because it reflects the phenotype of my region, Styria, which is Eastern, quite well. But I never believed that this phenotype is Slavic/Eastern.
In Styria there is massive historical fight between the two races of Germanics and Slavs on the other side of the borders. USSR occupation was felt very badly too.

I would say not him, but his son Patrick Schwarzenegger looks germanic.
