The people called themselves Macedonian regionally, not ethnically during the Ottoman era. Ethnically, most of the Slavs living in Vardar were ethnically Bulgarian. The force-feeding of an ancient Macedonian identity was brought upon the Bulgarians in Vardar by Stalin, Dimitrov and Tito. It pretty much died when Tito had a falling out with Stalin but revived later after FYROM seceded from Yugoslavia.
