Uralisch warriors can only have been moose-mounted (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose_cavalry):

Legends state that the Mansi people of Western Siberia rode into battle mounted on moose. The antlers of the animals are said to have been painted red. No evidence of such use has been found.[1] In the 18th-century Catherine the Great is said to have outlawed the domestication of the moose out of fear that dissidents exiled to Siberia might use them as mounts in any armed rebellion against her. The story is believed to be apocryphal.[1]

Since the novel describes a little-known page in history and presents the action through the eyes of a medieval person for whom the world is full of spirits, critics saw elements of fantasy in the novel [16] [17]. At the same time, Ivanov repeatedly pointed out that he left science fiction and that Heart of Parma has nothing to do with this genre [13].
