Default Are Romanians Bulgarians in denial?

I always knew that we are somewhat related, after all we were considered the same people in the medieval ages. But the names of some cities on this map from 1861 surprised me. There are a lot of Bulgarian toponyms such as Jablanitsa, Slatina, Orsova, Tirgovist, Slobodzeia

Considering you bulgarians cluster genetically closer to romanians than to other slavs and are the most brunet of slavs, it's more like bulgarians being romanians in denial with slavic language and just a bit more slavic and some greek and turkic bulgar too.

I wouldn't claim Romanians are Bulgarians in denial, but we have a lot in common, indeed.

Both Bulgarian empires exercised some political control over today's Romania. Even as late as the Ottoman conquest Wallachian rulers were, at least nominally, voyvods of the Bulgarian Tsars. The Bulgarian identity and ethnogenesis were complete in the early 10th century, while the Romanian ones are a product of the modern era. The Romanian church used Slavo-Bulgarian untill quite recently and about 30% of Romanian vocabulary used to be of Bulgarian origin prior to the recent latinization of the language.

My point is that todays Romanians could have switched to Bulgarian as we in the South did, provided the empire had a stronger control over its trans Danubian lands, which it didn't. The core of the empire was South of the Danube, hence its legacy, in the form of language and identity, is the strongest there.

Well, Vladislav I certainly was, but I can agree that Bulgarian control of Wallachia after 1242 basically ended.

Certainly. That's part of my reasoning.
