My great-great grandfather left Calabria for Brazil in the early 1900s with the intent on starting a business, but unfortunately died at sea. Interesting to think how things would've ended up if he made it and brought the rest of the family over.

And your great-great-grandmother stayed I assume? That was common amongst South Italians who came to Brazil. If he had succeeded you would be my neighbour.

Yep she stayed with my great grandfather and his brother and sister.

And actually, we would've be neighbors since he was headed for Sao Paulo.

Some people from the region of Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul. Mostly of Venetian and Lombardian ancestry.

I have visited Nova Trento, it looks like XIX century Italy. I was really amazed at how much Italian it was. I've been to Caxias do Sul too, which is quite Italian as well. In Brazil, contrary to the rest of Americas, entirely rural Italian communities developed, in the interior. The other Italian immigrants, to the other American countries, largely settled in the urban areas.

These are the numbers by state:

    http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imigra%...iana_no_Brasil

1,2 million Italians to São Paulo
100000 to Rio Grande do Sul
    60000 Italians to Minas Gerais
    25000 Italians to Espírito Santo
    25000 Italians to Santa Catarina
    20000 Italians to Paraná
The numbers to Santa Catarina are smaller but the impact there was stronger IMO, since it was not that much populated, and entirely isolated communities grew out to become entire cities, the same thing happening in Rio Grande do Sul, and also (to a lower extent) in Espírito Santo (Venda Nova do Imigrante, f.e).
