Forgive me if this is the wrong sub-forum, but I moved to the US several years ago and I'm still having trouble understanding the system of racial classification that is in place here. Based on my experiences in Bermuda and Australia, I have always self-identified as white(although I was recently excited to learn I have some Native ancestry), but recently a number of (white) Americans have said things that have made me question this. Within the past several months, people have told me:
- "You better be careful with the cops around here, they might pick on you because you're not white"
- "I can't believe you used to live in Australia, I thought everyone there was white!"
- "Nobody would believe we were brothers, you're not even white!"- An "olive skinned" Italian-American friend
I know this is a bizarre question, but I'm genuinely interested in hearing what the forum has to say as these remarks all surprised me. Here are pictures from (almost) every angle:
EDIT:I have a Spanish surname, so I suspect many people in America might assume that I am "Hispanic" and thus (in their view) not white. But I'm not sure if this is simply a reflection of a bias towards people with Spanish names or if I genuinely do not fit in Europe.
