It is possible, we have close cultural and trade connections based on archeological finds, maybe the merger happened just trough tribal confederations and common interests.
I think that this process was peaseful.

Finnish ethnogenesis contains two main component Uralic and Germanic. Germanics came to Finnish area about 200AD(+- something). Germanics setled in somewhere Rauma area(today)

Simultaneously migration came from north Estonia to SW-Finland. These two group merged.

Third migration wave came from SE-Finland.

Germanics changed their language to Uralic. But who the bring the Uralic language? Were those people from north Estonia or SE-Finland? I have heart that they were from SE-Finland but i don´t know it yet.

Before these migrations Sami people lived in hole area. They were pushed to the north. Eastern Finns mix up most.

Of course in the end of Viking age Swedes came here too. But i think they don´t have huge impact on Finnish ethnogenesis. They lived on their own areas.

Cultural groups in Finland are West Finns, East Finns and Sami people. They make modern Finn now. Of course Swedish Finns are included if they want to. And nowaday they want. You have to learn Finnish language if you want govermental or influental work opportunity.

Correct me if you have better knowledge.

How can Tavastian dialects not come from Estonia when East Finns speak their own dialects?
And the Germanics seem to have been there before 200AD, they where in Estonia also.
I would guess the Suebi confederation might have something to do with all this.

At this phase (soon after the beginning of the second millennium AD) all the present dialects of Finnish language were born or about to be born. There are three primary Finnic dialects behind the Finnish language (Old Karelian, Old Tavastian and Old North-Estonian), by the mixing if which were born the two secondary dialects (Old Savonian on the foundation of the two first and Old Finnish on the foundation of the two latter).

Your topic is about ethnogenesis. Does the word 'gene' in 'ethnogenesis' rings a bell ?
