Philippines aint a Catholic country. It's a voodoo country, and most people believe that stuff rather than Catholicism. There is also an exploding Evangelical Protestant and Charismatic Catholic movement. They basically believe the same things and act the same. Filipinos who actually follow and believe Catholicism are rare.
Filipino society is confusing to you all because it seems to be a contradiction, but it's not. It's a live and let live society, but the people are generally conservative. So they dress and act conservatively, but they dont care if someone is gay or if their neighbor is a prostitute, or if a black crackhead moves next door. It's all accepted. Live and let live.

I'm still confused as to what Philippines are racially. When I was younger I always thought they were dark east Asians. Sorry if this is off-topic.

Then there a few Filipinos here who are part European. I.E Simple, who's mom's surname "Rous" is French or me, my mum's surname is "Bascos" which is Portuguese.

Its Portuguese. My mum's clan has dropped and added letters to their surname with every new race they married. It was Vasco when they lived in Malacca, then Vascos when they moved to Macau and became Bascos when they moved to Pangasinan. That's to differentiate the different branches of the family tree. Wherein the pure Vasco branch is straight whereas we are out-branches that have miscagenated with Malacans, Japs and Chinese. But ultimately, her origins are Basque and her forefathers come from Basque country.
