In the World Index of Moral Freedom, despite being generally regarded as the world's most repressive/despotic state, North Korea scores better than Saudi Arabia and quite a few other Muslim nations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_..._Moral_Freedom

On the other hand, of course Saudi Arabia would have a rather freer economy than North Korea (not that that is saying much, but still).

    Both in equal measure.

North Korea is severely impoverished, authoritarian and oppressive, and has a penchant for murdering it's own people for trivial reasons, but it's foundations for it are not as dangerous as Saudi Arabia.

North Korea isn’t some anti-degenerate socialist utopia either. It has massive prostitution and crystal meth problems, in addition to a 1% leadership that is far more oppressive and unfair than the 1% in any given capitalist country.

The majority of the country (92-94%) lives without electricity or its on a clock. So, they live in the cold. They have been forced to cut down many forests just to stay warm and heat their food. This has led to a shortage of lumber and the regime is actually threating punishment for anyone caught trying to cut down lumber.

This is a picture of North Korea at night. As you can see to the left, China, and to the right, South Korea. That black spot in the middle with those tiny pieces of light. That's North Korea.

The regime has seen to it that the people are kept so much in the dark that they effectively live on another planet. For reference, South Koreans burn through 10,162 kilowatt hours of power per person per year. North Koreans each use just 739, so at least they are doing their bit for climate change.

Any North Korean who commits a crime or questions his leaders or government is sent to a prison camp. The inmates are forced to do hard labour. They are also starved and beaten for the slightest offenses. An Auschwitz survivor declared that these camps are just as bad if not worse than the Nazi concentration camps, and a UN commission stated that the prison system is a crime against humanity.

There is very little chance of escape, no international aid to speak of, and very little chance of ever seeing your family again. Eighty percent of the North Koreans who cross the border into China are women, and 90 percent of them fall victim to human trafficking. With a North Korean woman worth up to $2,000, getting a bride from North Korea is an investment for wealthy but ugly old Chinese men. Rape or death by starvation is a choice no human should have to make.

Saudi Arabia is a psychotic, oppressive, inbred dung heap of a country. Saudi Arabia is literally worse than North Korea, both in terms of human rights and in terms of sponsoring Islamic terrorism and extremism.

They commit human rights violations on a larger scale than North Korea and contribute absolutely nothing productive to the world, other than the oil they happen to be sitting on.

    They behead people in public.

    Spoiler!

From age of 10 a boy is a man in their world.

They have hundreds of thousands of foreign workers/slaves from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines. They have the "Kafala" system which is literally modern slavery. If you are non-Saudi then you are treated as a subhuman. They have no empathy for anyone apart from their own tribe.

When someone gets a job visa, he is under the direct supervision of the business owner. The immigrant can't do shit without the permission of the business owner, he can't travel abroad (not even back to his home country), he can't start his own business and he can't even change the job until he gets the permission of the initial business owner.

They are the property of the kafeel, and if they try to run away, they're called a "huroob" (runaway), beaten up and either jailed or returned to their employer to be beaten up or raped even more. They can be murdered, beaten, tortured, raped, starved etc. and the khaleejis are never ever punished for it.

It is a sophisticated form of modern slavery.

African refugees are left to die in detention camps unlike in Europe.

Somewhere they got the harebrained idea that Saudis would treat them no differently than the idiots of the north Mediterranean and points northward who took them in. That was a miscalculation.

Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf states are legitimized post-colonial juntas that are defended and supported for their oil by western powers despite their governments not changing in the slightest in the past hundred years.

These people have endless money, they are way into degeneracy and there are articles out in the open about connections to drugs, prostitution, human trafficking, slavery, pedophilia almost everywhere.

    Spoiler!

Anyway, the world economy is moving away from petroleum dependence, which will eventually decimate their state, which essentially functions as a rent-seeking mafia.

Saudi Arabia is a better place. I can say this as a Non-Muslim Pakistani-Canadian. Regarding the point about slavery, there is more slavery now than ever before in human history. It's seen in every continent.

Both places are absolutely horrible in many ways though. If you compare Pyongyang to some rural Saudi place where the crimes happen, then I feel like Pyongyang would actually be a better place, but overall, North Korea is slightly less worse than Saudi Arabia.

Iran a few decades ago was actually right up there especially for minorities.

However Middle Eastern places are not all horrible. Countries like UAE, Qatar and Oman (whilst they have their own problems) are not that bad and the UAE is probably right up there with other great countries around the world (though it has it's own problems). Iraqi Kurdistan is also very safe.

Regarding Korea, the difference between North and South is immense.

    Rather inchoate what you're saying.

Anyway, re my latest series of threads asking which country in a given pair is more statist and collectivist made me think about this thread. After all, Saudi Arabia has much stricter laws on social conduct than does North Korea (although doubtless those with money and connections often flout them), but on the other hand it has a much more 'free' and capitalist economy. So, which would ultimately count as more statist and collectivist? (In this particular pair in a perverse and oppressive sense?)

Both, each in their own unique way.

Not only Saudi Arabia but also MENA countries in general, specially the ones involved in dictatorship, are worser than any East Asian countries in all aspects.

I'd hardly argue that Oman or the UAE are worse than North Korea...

I guess I don't know much about Saudi Arabia, but I know how horrible it is in North Korea. Does Saudi Arabia have concentration camps?

    I vote North Korea.
