Yep, taking a dump was pretty good, then it got really bad, then it became good again.

Continuing the occasional Weird European Infrastructure Tour: an Italian lift that switches direction from horizontal to vertical. And honestly, until someone pointed it out to me, I could not figure out how this could possibly be done safely. In hindsight, it was kind of obvious. (By the way, the Ascensore Castello d'Albertis-Montegalletto is known by a few names: I went by the one that seems most commonly used online by both Italian-speaking and English-speaking folk.)

Michael Portillo’s 1936 Bradshaw’s Guide brings him to the Italian 'treasure island' of Sicily, full of natural beauty and 'scenery of the greatest charm'. But the interwar guide book also tells Michael that the head of government in Italy is the fascist leader Signor Benito Mussolini. On a railway journey from the capital, Palermo, through the ancient town of Agrigento and the port of Siracusa, to Europe’s largest volcano, Mount Etna, Michael explores Sicilian life under the dictatorship. Michael finds out how the dictator took on the mafia and asks whether it is true that under Mussolini, the trains ran on time. In Palermo, Michael takes in the art and architecture of the futurists and feasts on a Sicilian speciality - spaghetti and sardines - in the city’s Ballaro street market. In the Capo district, Michael learns how the island’s distinctive puppets are made and is enchanted to see them in action. Among the spectacular ancient Greek and Roman temples of Agrigento, Michael hears of the passionate ten-year search by a British archaeologist at the time of his guide for a long-lost ancient Greek theatre. The drama of the interwar period comes to life in front of Michael’s eyes as he joins six characters in search of an author at the Teatro Pirandello. Michael takes the helm to explore the port of Siracusa by boat before visiting a controversial monument, which depicts a dark chapter in Italian history. He concludes his Sicilian journey on the circular railway around Mount Etna, aboard the sleek, futurist-inspired train inaugurated by Mussolini in 1937 - La Littorina.

Steered by his 1913 railway guide, Michael Portillo takes the train from the former political capital of Italy, Turin, to Casanova's capital of romance, Venice. Along the way, he recreates the famous Italian Job on an historic Fiat test track and follows fashion in Milan before investigating the early 20th-century British love affair with Lake Como in a seaplane. In Verona, Michael discovers the 'House of the Capulets', bought to attract Edwardian tourists to the scene of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. He then heads over the rail bridge across the lagoon to Venice, where he finds a microcosm of pre-First World War Europe in the Venice Biennale art exhibition.

Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on the channel. For this week's video, I am trying out the infamous Fyra V250, now in service with Trenitalia as the Frecciargento 700 (classified as ETR.700). This journey begins at Milano Centrale, a truly grand construction, and in my opinion a tourist attraction in its own right. I am travelling on one of the Fyra V250 sets, which first operated for a few months in Belgium and The Netherlands on the SNCB/NS joint 'Fyra' high-speed operation from Amsterdam to Breda and Brussels. Unfortunately, these trains lasted only 39 days in full service, quickly being withdrawn due to a serious amount of major defects and problems (detailed in this document I found online: http://media.rtl.nl/media/financien/r...). After a long legal battle, the sets were returned to Italy, and in 2017 were bought by Trenitalia, who had them heavily overhauled and refurbished.

In 2019, the fleet re-entered service at last, on Frecciargento (silver-arrow) services on the Adriatic Railway route running Milano-Bologna-Rimini-Ancona-Bari-Lecce. The first stretch of the route to Palma is high-speed, allowing the trains to stretch their legs up to 155mph (250km/h), and afterwards on classic routes at up to 125mph (200km/h). After Rimini, the route skirts the titular Adriatic Sea, allowing sublime views of the coast and resorts. It's a spectacular journey, on what in my opinion is a now spectacular train. Check out the video to see what it's like to travel on a Fyra V250 in 2020! #frecciargento #fyraV250 #tripreport
