The Cortes family is one of the less than 5% of Icelanders who have surnames. Although Cortes's maternal grandfather was Polish and the family is a mix of Danish, English, Icelandic, Italian, Spanish and Swedish, they do not know how and where the family name "Cortes" comes from.

I forgot to read the last section but in the first part it says his mother is English, seems his maternal side is quite mixed though, atleast it's not Punjabi.

It's a possibility, is surname sounds Spanish to me.
