But I wouldn't overestimate proximity to Romanians. Culturally it's not very prominent IMO.

I personally feel no connection to Romanians.

Russians. Same Christian denomination. Both write in Cyrillic.

But closest to Bulgarians genetically would be Macedonians, Romanians, Serbs and Greeks. In that order.

Genetically closer to Balkan Turks because Balkan Turks are pred. East Balkan + Turkic and Anatolian admixture.

Culturally , ethnically, linguistically and religiously much closer to Russians obviously.

I found a Bulgarian waiter here in Spain and I asked him from where he was. I asked, Russian?
Obviously not all Bulgarians look so, but still I will go with the Russia answer.
