Default Phenotypical differences between Spain and Portugal.

Some of you on here have said that there are no differences, that the two are nearly identical populations.

Others have said there are minor differences.

I argue that there is a substantial difference, and it's not just on an eastern vs western Iberian basis, but that as a whole, there are distinctive appearances that pass only as Portuguese, while Spaniards are more pan-Med and pan-Western European. I think there are decent numbers of Spaniards who can pass in Italy and Greece as fairly typical, but you won't find this in Portugal.

Here are some collages of each. How much do they differ?

The two groups are mostly the same, only the Portuguese are a bit more brunette in colouring than the Spaniards.

There are also differences in phenotype between England and Wales, yet I don't see you making threads about that.

    The difference isn't as great.

I beg to differ. Even when I'm out and about in Swansea there are some English people who I can spot in the crowds without having to listen to them. Anyway, check this thread out that I made ages ago: http://www.theapricity.com/forum/sho...e-and-contrast

I think the range of phenotypes is roughly the same in both countries, but where Sikeliot may be right is that the frequency of different types differs. Generally, I'd say Spaniards have more pan-Western European types than do the Portuguese, who are more at Greek levels of Mediterranean-ness.

Slight differences. Spain is bigger, both more to the north and more to the south but despite that, the clustering position is the same.

As for the spaniards being lighter, i have yet to pick out spanish tourists here due to their lightness (usually it's their loud talk who give them away at first). At the same time, i'm not sure if spaniards would guess me as portuguese due to my darkness... but you never know.

I do agree that Sikeliot exaggerates in his "Portuguese are such a unique race" claim.
